Jewellery Care Guide
Jewellery Care Guide
Your ZAR Jewellery piece is designed to be enjoyed and treasured. With the right care, you can help preserve its appearance and condition for years to come.
Everyday Jewellery Care
To help protect your jewellery:
Remove jewellery before showering, bathing or swimming unless the product is specifically designed for such use
Remove jewellery before exercising or taking part in activities that may cause impact or excessive pressure
Apply perfume, creams, hairspray and cosmetics before putting on your jewellery
Avoid direct contact with household cleaning products and chemicals
Store jewellery separately to reduce scratching and tangling
Keep chains fastened when storing them
Avoid sleeping in delicate jewellery
Handle jewellery carefully when putting it on or taking it off
Perfume, Cosmetics & Chemicals
Perfume, hairspray, creams, lotions, cosmetics and cleaning products can affect the appearance of jewellery.
Where possible, allow these products to dry before putting on your jewellery and avoid applying them directly to the piece.
Chlorine and other chemicals can be particularly harsh on precious metals, finishes and gemstones.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver can naturally develop tarnish over time when exposed to air, moisture, chemicals and everyday products.
This is a natural characteristic of silver and does not necessarily indicate a fault.
Store silver jewellery in a dry place and, where appropriate, use a soft jewellery polishing cloth to gently restore its appearance.
Avoid abrasive materials or aggressive cleaning products.
Gold-Plated & Gold Vermeil Jewellery
Gold-plated and gold vermeil jewellery has a layer of gold over another metal.
The gold surface can naturally become thinner or change appearance with regular wear, particularly in areas exposed to friction.
To help preserve the finish:
Keep the jewellery away from perfume and chemicals
Remove it before showering, swimming and exercising
Avoid excessive rubbing
Store it separately when not being worn
Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth
The lifespan of a plated finish depends on the piece, frequency of wear and how it is cared for.
Gemstones
Gemstones can vary in hardness and durability.
Avoid exposing gemstone jewellery to strong impacts, chemicals, sudden temperature changes or unsuitable cleaning products.
Do not use abrasive cleaners unless specifically recommended for the particular gemstone.
If you notice a loose stone or setting, stop wearing the piece and contact us for advice.
Chains, Clasps & Delicate Pieces
Chains and fine components can be delicate.
Avoid pulling, twisting or applying excessive force to chains, clasps and delicate details.
Always check that clasps are properly secured before wearing your jewellery.
If a clasp becomes loose or a component appears damaged, stop wearing the piece and contact us.
Cleaning Your Jewellery
For regular care, gently wipe your jewellery with a soft, clean and dry cloth.
Avoid abrasive cloths, harsh chemicals and household cleaning products.
Some jewellery and gemstones require specialist cleaning. If you are unsure how to clean a particular ZAR piece, please contact us before doing so.
Storing Your Jewellery
When you are not wearing your jewellery:
Store each piece separately where possible
Keep jewellery dry
Use the original ZAR jewellery box or pouch where suitable
Keep chains secured to reduce tangling
Avoid storing jewellery in direct sunlight or humid environments
Keeping pieces separated also helps reduce scratches and surface damage.
If Your Jewellery Needs Attention
If your jewellery becomes damaged, a stone becomes loose, a clasp stops working or you notice another issue, stop wearing the piece and contact us before attempting a repair.
Please do not use household glue or attempt to repair, resize or modify your jewellery yourself.
